I hosted a "Manifestation Masterclass" this weekend with author Jacob Glass, who's one of my favorite spiritual teachers. At one point he talked about the "Law of Attraction" and gave us a helpful tip to support our creative process. "Don't be so concerned with what you're attracting, instead get clear on what you're attracted to - this will teach you a lot about why your life looks the way it does."
I thought that was such great advice. I immediately thought about how I feel when watching the news. Last year's election was a traumatic experience for a lot of people. With all the information pouring in from every angle, it was easy to get (and stay) triggered and upset. I found myself constantly visiting news sites, trying to stay current with all the shenanigans that were unfolding throughout the day. Each time I would visit NYTimes.com my blood would boil.
I developed a habit of regularly visiting news sources. I would justify it as "staying current" and besides, I needed to know what was happening "out there" so I could better support my students. If I knew what was upsetting them I could offer comfort and guidance. Eventually I started to understand that it's always the same thing happening again and again. Sure, the details change but it's generally the same theme repeating itself. I decided I wasn't interested in the details anymore and started to train myself to seek out GOOD news that was happening in the world. It's just as easy to investigate wonderful things people are doing as it is to explore the terrifying things that happened while I slept.
Jacob made another good point when it comes to current events and politics. He reminded us that we're surrounded by people, if there's something important that we need to know about someone is going to tell us. It's pretty hard to stay out of the loop these days. So, don't worry about burying your head in the sand by keeping your attention solely on the stuff that keeps you in alignment with peace. When you're focused on nightmarish details - you're keeping your head in the sand to all the GOOD that's happening. Why would you want to do that?
I'm attracted to life-giving, forward moving, expansive, beautiful, and loving things. These are also adjectives that I like to use when describing my life. When we become conscious of the stuff that we're attracted to - we become mindful of the things we're manifesting. Remember, what we place our attention on multiplies and grows. Are you disciplined enough to "place guards at the gate of your mind" so you can align with a vision you're interested in creating rather than a nightmare you'd like to avoid?
