I recommend doing some form of Spiritual practice when you begin your day. There's no complex reason other than it helps create a strong foundation to build your day upon. My friend and teacher, Jacob Glass said, "If we don't consciously hand our day over to Love, by default we give it to the ego (fear)". When I heard him say that, something clicked in me and now before my feet touch the floor in the morning, I take a moment to give my day to Love.
Consciously practicing gratitude is a particularly helpful practice first thing in the morning. As I sluggishly move towards the bathroom to brush my teeth I list all the things I can think of that I'm grateful for in my life. Because I'm not fully awake at that point I usually just name things that I'm looking at like running water, indoor plumbing, delicious toothpaste, and my husband. As I sit to enjoy my morning coffee, I write a gratitude list. I slowly keep building. I write a page in my journal, I read spiritual text and contemplate its meaning, and then I do a meditation and prayer practice. By the time I walk out the door I feel aligned with my intention to be a loving presence in the world.
Doing my spiritual practice in the morning sets my mind and heart up for the day ahead. It gets me moving in the direction I'm interested in going. The gratitude practice lets me gather evidence of the blessings in my life. The writing, reading, and contemplation allow me to deepen my understanding of spiritual law and integrate the principles into my life. The prayer and meditation support me in staying present and consciously send love into the shared collective.
My practice may not resonate with you and that's okay, it doesn't have to - it's my practice. I encourage you to find something that works for you... and then do it. Experiment with doing some form of practice in the morning and see how your day flows. Even if it's just taking a moment in the morning to hand your day over to Love/Spirit/God and ask for assistance as you navigate life for the next 24 hours. To me, it feels like my morning practice turns on a switch that activates Divine grace in my life, which makes my day easier. That alone makes it a sound investment.
